What scholars actually agree on

Strip away the argument about the word, and look at what remains. It is more than most participants in the argument notice.

The convergence

Democratic erosion is real, severe, and without precedent in modern American history. This is asserted, in their own registers, by every camp in the debate. The scholars who refuse the fascism label describe a descent into competitive authoritarianism faster and farther-reaching in its first year than Venezuela’s, Turkey’s, Hungary’s, or India’s.fact Evans, rejecting the label, calls the phenomenon dangerous on its own terms, a threat to democracy that does not need to be fascism to warrant alarm.fact Paxton, accepting the label, doubts the label’s usefulness while standing by the description underneath it.fact

The measured record is not seriously disputed by any of them. V-Dem’s finding, unprecedented scale and speed, democracy at its 1965 level,fact and Freedom House’s, the sharpest one-year decline of any free country,fact are cited across the debate’s camps, not contested between them.

The disagreement is about which analytic category best describes the phenomenon, and which comparison set is most useful. Behavioral fascism analysis points to interwar Europe’s mechanisms. Structural analysis says the mechanisms differ decisively. Regime-type analysis says the useful comparisons are Budapest and Ankara, not Rome and Berlin. These produce different labels for a record they hold in common.

Nobody serious asserts inevitability, in either direction. The reversal data, seventy-three percent of modern autocratization episodes ended in U-turns, is part of the same literature the harshest assessments come from,fact and the scholars who make the harshest assessment say explicitly that the American case is reversible, warning as much against fatalism as against complacency.fact

A reader who understands this page stops treating the label as the argument. The label is a classification dispute among frameworks, live and unresolved. The argument, the one with stakes, is about the documented record and what reverses it, and on that, the scholarly convergence is broad.inference
