Freedom House’s 2026 United States report documents the removal of eighteen inspectors general without the legally required congressional notice, the firing of the head of the Office of Special Counsel, the removal of the director of the Office of Government Ethics, and the dismissal of National Labor Relations Board members that left the board without a quorum for much of 2025.claim type: factRule of law

The Congressional Research Service’s analysis of Louisiana v. Quantitative measures
V-Dem’s Democracy Report 2026 states that the scale and speed of autocratization under the Trump administration are unprecedented in modern times: within one year the US Liberal Democracy Index score declined by 24 percent, its world rank fell from 20th to 51st of 179 countries, and the US level of democracy is back to its 1965 level.
