Robert O. Paxton: the behavioral definition What does the formation do?

Paxton himself checked enough of these after January 6, 2021 to reverse his position, and simultaneously judges the label to generate more heat than light. Both halves are on the debate page. His stage question is separate from the checklist: rooting, arrival, exercise, or radicalization.

Roger Griffin: the palingenetic core What does the formation believe?

Griffin runs this test restrictively and does not find it satisfied by the American case; scholars arguing a protofascist trajectory contend the revolutionary-order element is in motion. Which reading the evidence supports is precisely what you are scoring.

Steven Levitsky and Lucan A. Way: competitive authoritarianism Is the field tilted while competition remains real?

This framework’s authors find it satisfied and consider it the accurate category, in place of fascism, not in addition to it. Note the last element: it is what distinguishes this category from full authoritarianism, and it is also what makes reversal possible.
