Is Putin's Russia fascist?

Russia since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine is the most instructive live case the frameworks have: a personalist authoritarian regime waging a war of conquest justified by a cult of national restoration, analyzed in real time by the same scholars whose definitions this site runs on. The agreed record needs no component tags: an entrenched personalist regime, elections without competition, state-directed media, the criminalization of opposition and of accurate description of the war, an invasion aimed at erasing a neighbor’s statehood, and an official ideology of civilizational restoration.

The same evidence, run through the behavioral and ideological lenses, lands in different places.

Snyder’s case: a leader cult, a cult of the dead and of redemptive violence, state propaganda organized around national humiliation and rebirth, the designation of a neighboring people for destruction as an anti-nation, and a schizofascist rhetorical move, waging fascist war while calling the victims fascists. If the word describes what regimes do, a regime doing this has earned it, and withholding the label is a failure of description with policy consequences.
