Is Hindutva fascist?

The Hindutva question has a property none of the other contemporary debates share: a documented archival link to the original. It also has a property they all share: the link settles less than either side wants it to.

The documented history

Casolari’s archival research established the direct connection: Hindu nationalist leaders of the 1930s, including B. S. Moonje, who visited Italy and met Mussolini in 1931, explicitly admired the fascist model, and Moonje’s efforts to militarize Hindu youth organization drew on what he saw in Italian fascist institutions, influence that reached the RSS’s organizational culture through the Marathi nationalist milieu that founded it.claim type: fact Golwalkar’s 1939 approval of German race-consciousness is part of the same record. Is contemporary Hindutva, and the RSS-BJP formation, fascist?

Eighty years separate the documented influence from the present movement, and the dispute is over what survived the interval.

The affirmative case: the RSS is a uniformed, hierarchical, all-male cadre organization with a myth of civilizational rebirth from humiliation, exactly the palingenetic form; the movement’s project subordinates a religious minority in law and in street violence; and the historical self-description did not merely resemble fascism, it studied it. On Griffin’s or Mann’s criteria, the argument runs, the movement form qualifies even if the governing party operates electorally.

The negative case: the governing formation competes in real elections it can lose, and lost ground in 2024; the analytic categories that fit are Mudde’s populism and Levitsky and Way’s competitive authoritarianism, which is where the comparative datasets place India; there is no single-party state, no abolition of electoral politics, and no revolutionary rupture. The 1930s influence is real history, but classification by ancestry is the genetic fallacy, the same error this site refuses on the National Rally and Brothers of Italy.

The honest summary: the historical influence is documented beyond dispute; the contemporary classification is genuinely contested, and it is contested along exactly the movement-versus-regime line this site keeps drawing. The RSS as a movement and India as a polity can sit at different tiers of the gradient simultaneously. Most polemics on both sides depend on refusing that distinction.
