Is Hindutva fascist?

The Hindutva question has a property none of the other contemporary debates share: a documented archival link to the original. It also has a property they all share: the link settles less than either side wants it to.

The documented history

Casolari’s archival research established the direct connection: Hindu nationalist leaders of the 1930s, including B. S. Moonje, who visited Italy and met Mussolini in 1931, explicitly admired the fascist model, and Moonje’s efforts to militarize Hindu youth organization drew on what he saw in Italian fascist institutions, influence that reached the RSS’s organizational culture through the Marathi nationalist milieu that founded it.claim type: fact Golwalkar’s 1939 approval of German race-consciousness is part of the same record. These are established facts of intellectual history, not accusations.

The contested present

The measurement projects place India among ongoing autocratization episodes, with the erosion running through media capture, harassment of civil society, and majoritarian pressure on institutions.claim type: fact That profile is the competitive-authoritarian one, whatever else is also true.claim type: fact

The honest summary: the historical influence is documented beyond dispute; the contemporary classification is genuinely contested, and it is contested along exactly the movement-versus-regime line this site keeps drawing. The RSS as a movement and India as a polity can sit at different tiers of the gradient simultaneously. Most polemics on both sides depend on refusing that distinction.
